Though Chinese New Year has passed in a flash, yet there is this one day that will be etched in my mind forever. And this particular day is the eve of Chinese New Year. Now, one might ask how the eve of Chinese New Year can possibly be fun and enjoyable since you only get to eat the reunion dinner. However, it is precisely because of that which allowed me to enjoy that particular day. Even now, just thinking of the food can get me drooling. So, what exactly did I eat that day?
Arriving late due to a traffic jam, I missed the opportunity to ask my grandmother to cook my favourite fried chicken. Despite this, she still whipped up a sumptuous feast which definitely managed to fill my empty stomach. Moments before dinner was served, there was this aroma coming from the kitchen which was already tingling my taste buds, causing my already growling stomach to growl even louder. When the time finally came for us to eat, my grandmother finally revealed the source of the smell. It actually came from a piping hot pot of bat kut teh. Not being able to hold back, I immediately lunged forward to taste it first. Before the soup trickled down my throat, I took my time to savour it in my mouth. There was only one word to describe it. Heavenly.
And this was just the side dish. Imagine how the main dishes would taste like. There were foods ranging from crabs to shark's fin and of course being the greedy one, I took a scoop from each dish and dumped everything into my plate. However all of these were not the main attraction to me. Usually, a meal consists of the main dishes, a side dish and that day, it was the dessert that appealed to me the most. As I opened the fridge to grab a can of Sprite, a tray of what I thought was brownies caught my eye. Though I was already quite full, I just could not resist it. Before I knew it, I had already taken it out of the fridge and brought it into the living room to share with the rest. After slicing a piece of it, I practically threw it into my mouth. It was not a brownie. It tasted far better than that. Despite melting instantly once in contact with the saliva, the taste of the white chocolate still lingered in my mouth. Combined with the crispy and crunchy waffle hidden beneath it, I felt as though I was in heaven. I might be exaggerating a little, but it was really delicious. It was not like anything that I have tasted before. All I could say after eating it was that "It's finger lickin' good!"
Recalling those moments of how I stuffed myself that day, I just can't wait for the next reunion dinner.
